The most beautiful waterfalls in Germany

Article from Elinor

Eifel, Black Forest, Allgäu or Thuringian Forest: The most beautiful waterfalls in Germany are spread all across the country. Read on to find out where you can best camp nearby.

Waterfalls are among the most beautiful natural spectacles you can experience in this country. On longer hikes, they also make a perfect stop for a small picnic by the water or simply to catch your breath. That’s why we set out to find the most beautiful waterfalls in Germany – and campsites nearby. Let the water flow!

Trusetal Waterfall in the Thuringian Forest

The largest of Thuringia’s waterfalls is the Trusetal Waterfall, located in the heart of the Thuringian Forest, where the water cascades down more than 50 meters. Along the three waterfall tiers, visitors can follow a trail up to the top and enjoy sweeping views over the surrounding forest from the Teufelskanzel lookout point. But be careful: since it is an artificially created waterfall, the water only flows during the summer months.

Allerheiligen Waterfalls in the Black Forest

The Black Forest in Baden-Württemberg is home to some of the most beautiful waterfalls in Germany. At the very top of the list: the Allerheiligen Waterfalls with their impressive seven cascades. During your visit to this stunning spot in nature, you can explore the gorge via several stairways and cross the waterfalls by bridge. The surrounding Black Forest is also perfectly equipped with numerous hiking trails, making it one of the most popular (and most beautiful!) excursion destinations in Germany.

Urach Waterfall in the Swabian Alb

From a height of 37 meters, the waters of the Urach Waterfall plunge down into the valley of Maisental. To reach this beautiful waterfall, you can choose from several routes: there’s a short and easy path starting from the parking lot, as well as a number of circular hiking trails. The immediate area around the waterfall should not be entered, as the limestone tuff formations that have developed there (and continue to form) along with the mosses provide an important habitat for insects, which in turn are a vital part of the local food chain. However, the waterfall is just as impressive when viewed from a distance. You can also hike up to the meadow above, where you can admire this small natural wonder from the top – and even make use of a barbecue area.

Triberg Waterfalls in the Black Forest

They are among the highest waterfalls in Germany: the Triberg Waterfalls, which take us back to the Black Forest. Over seven cascades, the water plunges an impressive 163 meters down into the valley. A special highlight in the evening is the illumination of the waterfalls until 10 p.m., and the view from the footbridge with its viewing platform is equally breathtaking. By the way, the Triberg Waterfalls are also accessible in winter and offer an even more spectacular sight than in summer!

Geratser Waterfall in the Allgäu

Our next tip is (still) a bit of a hidden gem, as this waterfall is located right in the middle of the forest and a little further away from the region’s major tourist hotspots. The Geratser Waterfall in the Allgäu, which you can visit in both summer and winter, is therefore a great option for anyone who prefers a quieter hiking experience. You can reach the waterfall via a hiking trail that first leads you through the lush green landscapes of the Allgäu before arriving at the actual highlight. And all of this comes with views of the mountains!

Dreimühlen Waterfall in the Eifel

The Dreimühlen Waterfall in the Eifel is a very special highlight on our list – because it continues to grow towards the valley by around 10 centimeters each year! Want to see it with your own eyes? No problem: this waterfall can be visited all year round, either via the long-distance hiking trail Eifelsteig or the Kalkeifel cycle path. From the nearest parking lot, it takes only about 20 minutes to reach the waterfall. So if you happen to be in the area, you can easily make a spontaneous stop without much planning – whenever you feel like it.

Todtnau Waterfalls in the Black Forest

Back to the Black Forest once again! To the High Black Forest, to be precise. With water cascading down from a height of 97 meters, the Todtnau Waterfall is the highest natural waterfall in Baden-Württemberg. You can reach the waterfalls via various circular trails, paths starting from different parking lots, or for example the “Genießerpfad Wasserfallsteig” – perfect for those who want to turn their visit into a longer tour through the Black Forest. If you’re looking for a bit more adrenaline, you can also admire the waterfall from above on the BLACKFORESTLINE suspension bridge. Impressive views of the waterfall and the Black Forest are guaranteed!

Röthbach Waterfall in the Berchtesgadener Land

The highest waterfall in Germany is located in the Berchtesgadener Land. Over two cascades, its waters plunge 470 meters down into the valley – a truly impressive sight. To view the Röthbach Waterfall up close, visitors first need to take a boat across Lake Königssee to Saletalm, then continue for about 3 kilometers along Lake Obersee to Fischunkelalm. From there, a short walk through a small forest leads you to the waterfall. Definitely worth a visit!
