The leaves are turning orange, chestnuts are falling from the trees and squirrels are on the lookout for the biggest nuts! Autumn is here and nature shows itself in its noblest dress. The hiking season also gets off to a flying start.
The trees are glowing in the most magnificent shades of yellow and red, the temperatures are pleasant and once the morning mist has cleared the air feels wonderfully fresh. We gathered our top tips for the best campsites and an eventful autumn and hiking holiday.
Partnachklamm in Bavaria
In Bavaria, on the outskirts of Garmisch-Partenkirchen you'll find the hiking tour through the Partnachklamm gorge. The path through this 700 m long and up to 80 m deep natural monument leads along narrow stone paths, past waterfalls and throuth winding rock faces. Partly also through tunnels and passages - which is why the mountain gorge remains accessible even in winter. It is particularly beautiful in autumn though when the treetops above the rock faces glow in bright colours.
Nearby lies the Naturcamingpark Isarhorn. The campsite is located at the foot of the Karwendel Mountains. From here you can start many great autumn hikes in the whole region or set off into the mountains on your mountain bike. In winter, there are wonderful cross-country trails and skiing areas in the immediate proximity.
Steirische Krakau
Pristine forests with ancient and giant spruce trees and slender larches show the natural beauty of autumn in the Krakau Valley. The colourful leaves are not only visible on the trees but are reflected in many mountain lakes. The hiking offer is very diverse and you can find great hikes for beginners as well as advanced hikers here. Especially in autumn, the Krakautaler Höhenwanderung to Schattensee is a dream hike with a wonderful view over lakes, peaks and forests. The starting point is the ´Bergsteigerdorf-Partnerbetrieb Jagawirt` in Unteretrach. You should allow approx. 4-5 hours hiking time for the tour and take enough food with you as there are few huts with refreshments along the way.
The Waldcamping Tamsweg is a campsite in the middle of nature. Here you can combine camping and hiking perfectly and it's only a 20 minutes' drive to the middle of the beautiful Krakau Valley. Relaxation, pure enjoyment of nature and adventures for the whole family.

When autumn really picks up speed, it gradually lends the Alpenwelt Karwendel in Tyrol its very own atmosphere. Colourful leaves, clear air and pleasant temperatures entice you to enjoy, hike and cycle in the mountains. The large Ahornboden in the Karwendel mountains offers numerous autumn hikes. Day tours starting at the large Ahornboden lead to the two popular Karwendel huts, the Falkenhütte and the Lamsenjochhütte. If you want to reach a summit on your autumn hike then head for the Gamsjoch (2452 m), the Sonnjoch (2457 m) or the beautiful Hahnkampl.
A well-located campsite is the Karwendel Camping - Maurach on the Achensee. A cosy, family-friendly campsite on the edge of the forest. You will definitely find a suitable pitch for your caravan, motorhome or camper.
Franconian Switzerland in Germany
Franconian Switzerland also presents its colourful side in autumn. In the hiking region between Bamberg, Nuremberg and Bayreuth you will find a hiking tour through the beautiful Aufseßtal. There are many places to stop for refreshments in cosy brewery pubs. It's a circular route with panoramic views and takes about 3:30 hours.
There's a campsite at the Reichold brewery in Aufseß. So after your visit to the brewery you can drop straight into your camper to sleep.
Kitzbuehler Alps in autumn
Clear days with the best distant views and pleasant temperatures make autumn a special holiday season. Between Chiemgau and Kaiserwinkl you can find a few perfect mountain tours for autumn hiking. The Kampenwand is usually very crowded. Our tip: go for a autumn hike on the neighbouring 1,472 m high Sulten. The shortest ascent starts from Hintergschwendt and first leads you along paths through the forest towards the Steinlingalm. You should plan about 2.5 hours for this autumn hike.
At Chiemsee in Bernau Felden you will find pitches for your camper. There are 50 spacious pitches waiting for you. Lake Chiemsee is right on your doorstep and you can start your hiking tours from there.
