Austria — the land of mountain lakes, streams, and hikes with breathtaking panoramas as far as the eye can see. Start your short trip with a camper and explore Lake Attersee, the largest inland lake in Upper Austria.

Lake Attersee is located about an hour’s drive east of Salzburg, in Upper Austria. The size of the lake gives you a wide range of activities to choose from, including sailing or stand-up paddling. Around the lake, you’ll also find various access points to the water — from sandy beaches and public facilities to quieter spots where you can enjoy some time to yourself.

Campsites at Lake Attersee

All around Lake Attersee, you’ll find a variety of campsites. Some offer direct access to the lake, while others are just a short walk away and sit right next to the impressive rock walls of the surrounding mountain landscape.

Camping Grabner in the mountaineering village of Steinbach

The campsite Camping Grabner is located on the southeastern part of Lake Attersee, right on the lakeshore, giving you direct access to the water. You can choose between different pitch options: Standard, XL, Comfort, and Lakeside. Prices for the pitches range from €10.30 to €16 in the high season. Adults aged 15 and over pay €10.40, and children €7.10. Additional costs may apply, for example if you bring your dog, and there are also charges for electricity and local taxes.
The Lakeside pitch — as the name suggests — is located in the front row on the shoreline, allowing you to enjoy a lake view right from your camper.
It’s especially beautiful to wake up in the rooftop tent of the camper in the morning and look out at nature through the window. During our camping trip at Lake Attersee, we didn’t have the lake right in front of us, but instead an amazing view of the mountain landscape and peacefully grazing horses.

Camping Bruckbacher in Nußdorf

The Camping Bruckbacher campsite is located on the eastern side of Lake Attersee. The site offers both permanent pitches and spots for short trips with your motorhome. This campsite also provides direct access to the water via several piers. It’s the perfect place for families, but also for solo travelers who want to unwind in nature — whether that’s relaxing by the lake or getting active with one of the many watersports available.
Prices vary depending on the travel period and, in high season, a pitch costs €14 per night. Adults pay €8.50 and children €6 per person. Additional fees apply here as well, for example for dogs or electricity usage. You can request a pitch via the email address provided on the campsite’s website.

Free standing and wild camping at Lake Attersee in Upper Austria

Whether with a tent in the middle of the forest or with your camper parked on the roadside: In Austria, free standing or overnight stays outside of official campsites are largely prohibited and can result in significant fines. You can find more detailed information about wild camping in Austria here.
During peak season, many of the good campsites are often fully booked in advance, which means that on a spontaneous road trip to the mountains, you may need an alternative solution. The app park4night shows you designated spots for your camper. It also tells you whether the locations provide toilets, electricity, and other amenities, and whether it’s a night parking spot or only for daytime use.
Around the lake, there are plenty of parking areas with a view of the water. If you want to secure one of these spots, especially during high season, you should plan to arrive early in the morning.

Unfortunately, most parking areas are intended for daytime parking only and not for camping or overnight stays in your camper.
However, overnighting in daytime parking lots is often tolerated by the authorities. Still, you should be aware of the possible consequences.

Jana’s short trip to Lake Attersee

In mid-August, we spent two nights at Lake Attersee camping in the Ocean, and enjoyed a very relaxing short getaway there.
After checking out several parking areas with the camper, we found a large parking lot with toilets and fresh water. Officially, overnight stays and camping weren’t allowed there, but we (along with a few other campers) took the risk, stayed for three days, and everything went smoothly! :) The parking fees were €3 for 6 hours and €6 for 12 hours during the day.

The location was great. It took us about 10 minutes to walk to the shore of Lake Attersee and 10 minutes in the other direction to reach the starting point of a hiking trail from which several routes begin. We did the “Großer Schoberstein” hike, which is part of the Höllengebirge mountain range. The hike to the summit at around 1,100 meters takes about 90 minutes — so roughly 3 hours total including the descent.
The view from the top was absolutely worth the effort, and even during the ascent we repeatedly had amazing views of Lake Attersee.

Right at the start and end point of the hike, on the opposite side of the road, is the Äußere Weißenbach stream, whose cold water provides the perfect way to cool off after your hike.
